Region of la Taille Rouge.

Château of Sully sur Loire

The castle is mentioned in 1102 for its control of a bridge over the Loire that disappeared during the XIV century. In 1218, Phillipe Auguste built a master tower there. In 1395, Guy de la Trémoille started construction of the current castle, the blueprints for which were drawn up by Raymond du Temple (architect of the king and duke of Orléans). In 1602, it was acquired by Maximilien de Béthune, the great Sully, first duke of this name. Between 1602 and 1609, he transformed the château as he saw fit, and added a yard. Since then, during the XVIII century, the building has suffered numerous changes (transformations, core constructions and destructions…).
The castle was classed in 1928 as a historical monument and opened to the public in 1933. It was damaged in the June bombings of 1940 and again in the August bombings of 1944.
The Loiret concil has owned it since 1962.
Every June, it hosts an international classical music festival.
